Helping the Low Income Heat Their Homes

Even though we have been experiencing milder than normal winters, the price for natural gas and oil remain high. This has become a very big burden, especially for low income families. To help working families heat their homes, Senator Dorgan supports the Low Income Heating Assistance Program (LIHEAP), which can provide help with these bills.

President Bush has proposed cutting LIHEAP funds by 18 percent in his FY 2008 budget. Senator Dorgan feels this is the wrong priority. He recently joined 25 of his colleagues in a letter to the Budget Committee that requests funding LIHEAP at $5 billion this year – the funding level authorized in the Energy Policy Act of 2005.

Senator Dorgan believes that when cold weather hits, low income families should not have to choose between heating their homes and other necessary expenses.
