U.S. Senator Daniel K. Akaka (D - Hawaii) issued the following statement today:

"The start of the impeachment trial of the President of the United States in the Senate is a lamentable chapter in America's history. As a Senator, a juror, and a judge, it is in the nation's best interest that the Senate proceed in a bipartisan manner. Only through a fair and expeditious process can civility and confidence in public life be restored. The presentation and examination of the evidence supporting the two articles of impeachment passed by the House of Representatives should move forward in a timely and bipartisan manner.

"Taking the oath 'to do impartial justice according to the Constitution and laws so help me God' was a solemn moment which eloquently illustrates the responsibility facing every member of the Senate. As the Senate trial continues, I am mindful of the trust given me by the people of Hawaii as their Senator."
