Committee to Hold Legislative Hearings on Climate Change Proposals

Washington, D.C. – As the Senate continues debating climate change, Rep. John D. Dingell (D-MI), Chairman of the Committee on Energy and Commerce, today announced that the Committee will begin hearings this month on legislative proposals to reduce greenhouse gas emissions.

“These hearings will help inform our work as the Committee continues drafting legislation to reduce greenhouse gases,” said Dingell. “This will give us an opportunity to more closely examine the strengths, weaknesses, and practicality of pending proposals.”

The hearings will examine various legislative proposals that have been referred to the Committee on Energy and Commerce, including H.R. 1590, the Safe Climate Act of 2007, and H.R. 6186, as well as Senate proposals such as S. 3036, the Lieberman-Warner Climate Security Act of 2007.

The hearings will be held in the Subcommittee on Energy and Air Quality. Hearing dates and witness lists will be posted to the Committee on Energy and Commerce website when available.

To date, the Committee has held more than 20 hearings and has issued four Climate Change Legislative Design White Papers as part of its efforts to enact an economy-wide climate change program.

The most recent White Paper released last week and entitled “Getting the Most Greenhouse Gas Reductions for Our Money,” discusses ways to keep costs as low as possible while still achieving our environmental goals.

Information about the Committee’s White Papers, hearings and other work on climate change is available on the website.
