Senators Stabenow, Levin Announce Over $1.7 Million to Keep Our Children Safe

WASHINGTON —U.S. Senators Debbie Stabenow (D-MI) and Carl Levin (D-MI) announced today that the U.S. Department of Justice Office of Community Oriented Policing Services (COPS) is awarding $1,775,819 to seven Michigan organizations as part of the COPS Secure Our Schools programs intended to improve security in schools. The grants will help provide funding for equipment that can help deter crime, assess security in schools, and train local law enforcement.

“Keeping our children safe is one of the most important responsibilities we have,” said Stabenow. “The COPS program has served our communities well in the past, and I am pleased to know that our families will be safer and better protected as a result of this much-needed funding.”

“The COPS program provides much-needed federal dollars to help local law enforcement agencies put more cops on the beat,” said Levin. “This Secure Our Schools funding will help promote cooperation between school officials and law enforcement agencies and ensure that our children are free to learn in a safe environment.”

In addition to funding school safety projects, COPS supports innovative local community policing initiatives, funds the purchase of crime-fighting technology, provides training and technical assistance resources, and funds the hiring of local law enforcement officers. Since 1995, COPS has invested more than $11.3 billion to advance community policing, including grants awarded to more than 13,600 state and local law enforcement agencies.

To date, the COPS program has awarded over $239 million to law enforcement agencies in the State of Michigan. COPS grants have helped add over 3,000 additional police officers and 153 school resource officers in primary and secondary schools to improve safety for students, teachers, and administrators throughout Michigan.
