Department of Housing and Urban Affairs
Step One of Three

In 1937, the first steps were made in establishing the Department of Housing and Urban Development with the passing of the U.S. Housing Act of 1937. The Department of Housing and Urban Development Act of 1965 created HUD as a Cabinet-level agency. The HUD’s mission is to increase homeownership, support community development and increase access to affordable housing free from discrimination. Current programs fall under the general categories of major grant, assistance, and regulatory programs, community planning and development, demonstrations and university programs, fair housing, government sponsored enterprises, healthcare facility loans, Indian programs, lead hazard control, multifamily housing, public housing, securities, and singly family housing programs
