Gordon Discusses Importance of Innovation, Competitiveness with Nation's Governors

At the closing session of the 2007 National Governor’s Association (Feb. 27), Chairman Bart Gordon (D-TN) stressed the need for an innovative scientific research and development community, in order for the U.S. to remain competitive in the global economy.

Gordon said the country must start by taking steps to ensure that American students and workers are prepared for the future.

Gordon, who spoke along with U.S. Senator Lamar Alexander (R-TN), also shared with the nation’s governors what action is being taken at the federal level to increase the competitive capacity of the U.S.

In the 110th Congress, Gordon has made innovation a top priority by reintroducing a package of innovation bills based on the recommendations made in the National Academies’ “Rising Above the Gathering Storm” report.

The next day (Feb. 28) at a full Committee markup, S&T Members approved Gordon’s Sowing the Seeds through Science and Engineering Research Act (H.R. 363), a measure designed to increase support for scientific research and encourage young scientists and researchers to pursue high-risk/high-reward research.
