DOLE NAMED “BEST OF CONGRESS”
One of only 10 Senators to receive award

August 12th, 2008 - Washington, D.C. - U.S. Sen. Elizabeth Dole is being recognized by Working Mother Media and Corporate Voices for Working Families as the “Best of Congress” for her efforts to enhance working families’ quality of life through family-friendly work policies. Dole is one of only ten Senators to receive the 2008 award.

“Working families are the backbone of America, and I am committed to helping them realize both their professional and familial goals,” said Dole. “Work and family should compliment, not conflict, with each other, and there are some good, common sense public policies we can put in place to help working parents accomplish that healthy balance.”

Dole has been a leader in the Senate to extend the Family Medical Leave Act to military families, giving them the ability to leave work for extended periods of time to be by the side of a loved one during recovery. Dole has also made ending hunger one of her top priorities in the Senate. In North Carolina alone, around one million of the state’s nearly nine million residents are struggling with food insecurity issues, and Dole successfully pushed for a number of anti-hunger and nutrition initiatives to be included in the Farm Bill.

A profile of Dole is featured in the August/September 2008 issue of Working Mother magazine and at www.workingmother.com.

“Not only did we judge Sen. Dole on her voting records for supporting working families, we also examined the benefits that her own employees receive like paid leave and flextime,” Carol Evans, CEO, Working Mother Media, said. “Sen. Dole is stepping up voluntarily because she believes in progressive policies and acts on her beliefs in the real world managing her staff.”

“Sen. Dole has shown what can be accomplished through legislation and a personal commitment to policies that benefit working families,” said Donna Klein, president and founder of Corporate Voices for Working Families. “As our nation wrestles with a host of economic and other issues involving working families, Sen. Dole deserves to be congratulated and recognized nationally for her leadership and support.”

Members of Congress were judged on their voting record, sponsored/co-sponsored legislation and efforts to promote legislation that supports working families. In addition, they were asked to submit policies and practices within their own offices that support working families and flexible workplace options.

Applications were reviewed by a bipartisan steering committee co-chaired by Ted Childs, Founder and Principal of Ted Childs, LLC and Jane Swift, Founder and Principal of WNP Consulting, LLC and former Governor of Massachusetts. Also on the steering committee reviewing applications were Patricia Kempthorne, Founder and Executive Director of the Twiga Foundation and Pat Schroeder, President and CEO of the Association of American Publishers and former congresswoman from Colorado.

Background

The Best of Congress award will be presented to Dole during a recognition breakfast in Washington on September 10, 2008.
