Appropriations

 

The Senate Appropriations Committee is the largest committee in the U.S. Senate. Its role is defined by the U.S. Constitution, which requires "appropriations made by law" prior to the expenditure of any money from the Federal treasury. The Committee, chaired by Robert Byrd (D-West Virginia), writes the legislation that allocates federal funds to the numerous government agencies, departments, and organizations on an annual basis.

Select Committee on Intelligence

 

The Senate Intelligence Committee conducts oversight of and authorizes budget for the U.S. intelligence community, which includes the Central Intelligence Agency, the National Security Agency, National Reconnaissance Office and a variety of other offices responsible for national intelligence production and analysis.

 

In the wake of the 9-11-01 terrorist attacks, the U.S. intelligence community is undergoing an unprecedented review of its organization and ability to detect and prevent subsequent attacks against the U.S. and its interests. Bond is Vice Chairman of this committee. 

 

Committee on Environment and Public Works

 

The Committee's oversight covers extends to programs in five cabinet level departments and seven independent agencies.

 

These agencies include the Department of the Interior's Fish and Wildlife Service, the Department of Transportation's Federal Highway Administration and the Coast Guard, the Department of Commerce's Economic Development Administration and National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration, the Department of Agriculture's Natural Resources Conservation Service, the Environmental Protection Agency, the GSA's Public Buildings Service, the Council on Environmental Quality, the civil works program of the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers, the Tennessee Valley Authority, the Appalachian Regional Commission, the Nuclear Regulatory Commission, the Federal Emergency Management Agency, the Mississippi River Commission, and the nonperforming functions of the John F. Kennedy Center for the Performing Arts.

Committee on Small Business and Entrepreneurship

 

This committee has jurisdiction over the Small Business Administration (SBA). The committee also has the responsibility to study and survey by means of research and investigation all problems of American small business enterprises.
