(WASHINGTON, D.C.) – U.S. Senator Byron Dorgan (D-N.D.) announced Thursday that he has secured $1.35 million to pave and make other safety improvements to roads in Cannonball and Fort Yates, N.D.

The funding will be used to pave BIA roads 3000 and 3700, which are currently gravel roads, on the Standing Rock Reservation. The project will also improve safety by adding sidewalks, signs and lighting along the routes.

The project will also create 50 to 75 construction and related jobs. The tribe will provide an employee training program that provides on-the-job training to tribal members who are interested in construction work.

Through his seat on the Transportation, Housing and Urban Development Appropriations Subcommittee, Dorgan secured the funds as part of the FY 2009 appropriations bill.

“This project will not only improve roads, but they will improve safety in two new housing developments and provide an opportunity for tribal members to get on-the-job training in construction,” Dorgan said. “This funding is a good investment in the future of the Standing Rock Reservation and its members.”
