(DICKINSON, N.D.) – At a medal ceremony here today, Senator Byron Dorgan (D-N.D.) presented 91-year-old Laudie Hanel with the Bronze Star for his heroism in World War II.

“Today we honor Laudie Hanel with this medal for his brave service in the second World War,” Dorgan said. “Laudie proudly served our country, and this award is a symbol of how we should never forget his heroism and sacrifice.”

The Bronze Star is awarded to American military veterans who served their country after Dec. 6, 1941, for heroic behavior.

Hanel served in the U.S. Army from 1941 to 1945 in the Pacific. He fought in Guadalcanal and also helped guard the American supply line to Australia.

Also at the event family members presented Hanel with the American Campaign medal, the American Defense Service Medal, the Combat Infantryman Badge, the Good Conduct Medal, the Honorable Service Lapel Button, the Presidential Unit Citation and the World War II Victory Medal.
