(WASHINGTON, D.C.) – U.S. Senator Byron Dorgan (D-N.D.) announced Thursday that the Department of Energy has released $5.904 million in federal funding he secured for North Dakota State University’s Center for Nanoscale Energy.

The funding will be used by North Dakota State University to develop new nanomaterials that can help improve energy efficiency and reduce our country’s reliance on foreign sources of energy. Through the project, researchers will examine new materials to improve the efficiency of converting solar energy to electricity and develop new catalysts to convert plant material into products currently derived from petroleum.

As Chairman of the Senate Energy and Water Appropriations Subcommittee, Dorgan writes the bill that funds the nation’s energy research program. Dorgan included the funding for NDSU”s project in last year’s appropriations bill.

“This project is another example of the cutting-edge technology coming out of the Red River Valley Research Corridor,” Dorgan said. “I’ve been saying for a long time that a big part of the solution to America’s energy problem is increasing energy efficiency and the domestic production of energy. This project will help North Dakota be a player in both of those areas.”
