Oregon continues to build on a long history of protecting the environment and ensuring it’s national treasures are sustained for generations to come.  Setting nationwide examples, Oregon was the first state to adopt such environmental landmarks as the Oregon Forest Practices Act, the Beach Bill, the Oregon Plan for salmon, and the Oregon Resources Protection Act. I believe this legacy of good stewardship and consensus-based decision-making should be applied to the complex environmental issues under consideration in Congress. Throughout my service on the Senate Energy and Natural Resources Committee, I have worked with Oregonians and federal agencies to improve and protect the long-term health of our rich natural landmarks. Together, we have created the 4th largest wilderness area in Oregon at Steens Mountain, provided record levels of funding for salmon recovery, and protected the Little Sandy watershed near Portland. And while I believe environmental protection is important, I do not believe that it should result in economic hardship. Many Oregonians make their living from the land, and we must find a balance between environmental protection and economic prosperity.
