UPDATE: Committee Receives Responses from 19 Companies Regarding Lead Found in Children’s Products

Washington, D.C. – The Committee on Energy and Commerce has received responses to each of the 19 letters sent on August 23 to companies whose products were discovered to contain levels of lead beyond lawful standards, resulting in recalls of millions of toys and other children’s products this year. In the letters, Reps. Bobby L. Rush (D-IL), Chairman of the Subcommittee on Commerce, Trade and Consumer Protection, and Ranking Member Cliff Stearns (R-FL) announced a Committee investigation into products containing lead.

“We are reviewing the responses to the letters, but note that some have provided incomplete answers,” said Rush. “We plan to follow up with those companies to obtain full and detailed information,” said Rush.

The Subcommittee will hold a two-day hearing on the issue tomorrow, Wednesday, September 19, and Thursday, September 20. Witnesses will include Consumer Product Safety Commission (CPSC) Acting Chairman Nancy Nord, CPSC Commissioner Thomas Moore and Mattel CEO Robert Eckert.
