Addressing Violence and Indecent Content in the Media
To address the growing problem of excessive violence and indecency on television, Senator Rockefeller is pushing for legislation that would give the FCC explicit authority, for the first time, over violent programming and would increase fines for gratuitous violent or indecent content.
Numerous studies over the last 20 years have shown that violence on television can have a significant impact on anti-social and violent behavior in children. Sadly, by the time a child leaves elementary school, they will have seen on average 100,000 acts of violence on television.
In roundtable meetings throughout West Virginia, Senator Rockefeller has heard first-hand from parents just how difficult it is to protect their kids from this kind of television content. Senator Rockefeller believes that parents need more than just blocking mechanisms, such as the V-chip, to help protect their children from objectionable programming - they need real choices and more family oriented programming. |
