Protecting our Children from Substance Abuse

Addiction and substance abuse can take a terrible toll on families, especially young children. Senator Rockefeller believes that every effort should be made to educate and protect children about the dangers of drugs.

Senator Rockefeller has always believed that education programs are essential to protect young people from drugs and alcohol. He is the author of the Student Drug Education and Prevention Act, legislation that laid the foundation for the drug education provisions in the overall anti-drug bill that was adopted to combat the war on drugs. The Drug-Free Schools and Communities Act channeled federal funding directly to schools to promote classroom education and teacher training.

To address the growing methamphetamine problem in West Virginia, Senator Rockefeller has held numerous roundtables with law enforcement officers and local political leaders to hear how they're fighting the meth scourge and what resources they need from the federal government. Rockefeller continues to fight for increased federal funding for the Edward Byrne Memorial grant program and the High Intensity Drug Trafficking Area program in order to make sure that law enforcement officials throughout West Virginia have the tools they need to fight this growing problem.
