Fortenberry Supports Full Bonuses for Combat-Wounded Veterans

Washington, DC - Congressman Jeff Fortenberry today applauded the passage of the Veterans Guaranteed Bonus Act (H.R. 3793) in the U.S. House of Representatives, a bill that he cosponsored. Wounded veterans will receive their full bonuses. Recently information circulated stating that injured servicemen and women were required to pay back or denied their enlistment bonuses. The Department of Defense later clarified that official policy permits wounded soldiers to recover their full bonuses.

“While I am pleased that the Department of Defense has clarified the policy, we need to ensure that no veteran endures such an injustice. This legislative safeguard would require the Department of Defense to pay full bonuses to veterans medically discharged due to combat-related wounds. Veterans injured in battle deserve no less,” Fortenberry said.

If veterans are having problems with their bonuses, they can get help by contacting the Wounded Soldier and Family Hotline at (800) 984-8523. Callers will receive a response within one day of their call. They can also email the hotline at wsfsupport@conus.army.mil. More information can be found at http://www.armyfamiliesonline.org/.
