On Monday, July 14, 2008, Senator Brown delivered petitions signed by more than 9,000 members of the Wilmington community to Mike Schmitt, Director of Hub Operations at DHL Worldwide. Senator Brown was accompanied by more than one hundred fifty DHL, ABX, and ASTAR Air Cargo employees and their families.
On Sunday, July 13, 2008, Senator Brown accompanied Julian Bond, Chairman of the NAACP National Board of Directors, and Cincinnati Mayor Mark Mallory to give opening greetings to delegates at the first public mass meeting of the convention.

Senator Brown chaired a Senate Health, Education, Labor, and Pensions (HELP) Committee hearing on June 24 about the rise of antimicrobial resistance. The hearing addressed the proliferation of methicillin-Staphylococcusaureus (MRSA) and other drug resistant infections.
Senator Brown joined the Columbus Housing Partnership and homeowners facing foreclosure on June 23, 2008 to discuss federal legislation that would help homeowners avoid foreclosure and revitalize struggling communities. Brown toured a rehabbed home on North 21st St., a block that has been particularly hard hit by the housing crisis.
Senators Sherrod Brown (D-OH), Debbie Stabenow (D-MI), and Sheldon Whitehouse (D-RI) held a press conference June 17th with Virginia Hoover, a single mother who was laid off from her job last November, to discuss Democrats’ efforts to extend unemployment benefits. In May the U.S. economy lost jobs for the fifth straight month, including the single largest monthly increase in unemployment – from 5 percent to 5.5 percent – since 1986. Democrats know we cannot afford to wait while this problem only worsens; we have an obligation to act now.
