Congressman Clyburn Announces Orangeburg Fire Department to Receive Fire Safety Grant

(Washington, DC) - Sixth District Congressman James E. Clyburn announced Wednesday that the West Middle Fire Department in Orangeburg would be receiving $87,210 in federal grant money from the U.S. Department of Homeland Security's 2003 Assistance to Firefighters Grant Program. These grants will be used to support fire operations and fire safety, including training and fitness, as well as acquiring protective equipment.

"Actively pursuing these competitive federal grants is one of the best investments our public safety officials can make," Congressman Clyburn said. "Our communities' firefighters deserve only the highest quality training and equipment when risking their lives to protect all of us."

Over the past few months, Congressman Clyburn has announced similar federal grants for local departments in towns like Kingstree, Marion, Pamplico and Summerton. In all, Sixth District fire departments have received more than $1 million in federal support in the past year alone.

Grants like the one awarded Wednesday are given to urban, suburban and rural departments across the country. Departments must show, among other qualities, a need for the use of the training or equipment and a financial incapacity to acquire it on its own.
