Dear Friend,

This week, I continued my work in Congress to help ease the burden Americans are faced with due to a failed energy policy. As Independence Day approaches amidst the busy summer travel season, I am advocating that Congress do all it can to address record high fuel prices that are inflicting a great deal of economic hardship on working families across Arkansas. One specific approach I believe is necessary to start easing this burden is legislation that will target price gouging and market manipulation. In addition, I secured a Congressional hearing to further examine the crippling effect rising prices are having throughout our country.

I am proud to cosponsor the “Prevent Unfair Manipulation of Prices Act,” which will heighten penalties for market manipulation and increase oversight on energy speculators. I am also working with my colleagues on both sides of the aisle to pass the “Federal Price Gouging Prevention Act.” This measure will protect American consumers and businesses from gas profiteers by making it illegal to sell oil at an excessive price. These bills will provide greater confidence in the oil markets by holding companies and speculators accountable for their actions.

As a member of the House Energy and Commerce Committee which has jurisdiction over energy issues, I also secured a Congressional hearing this week to help to determine the causes of the recent spike in oil and diesel costs. Before the Oversight and Investigations Subcommittee of the House Energy and Commerce Committee, I told a panel of my colleagues that Congress must determine what actions it can take to help bring down the price at the pump which is taking a heavy toll on every sector of our economy.

As gas prices continue to hit historic highs, I remain committed to working in Washington to help our nation develop a sound energy policy that will lower prices in the short term, while taking the necessary steps to becoming energy independent in the future. It is past time to enact a comprehensive energy plan, and as your voice in our Nation’s Capitol I will continue to fight for a solution that will benefit all Americans.

Sincerely,

Mike Ross Signature
