U.S. Sen. John Cornyn Visits UTEP

KFOX / El Paso
Monday, August 18, 2008

Meeting with law enforcement heads at UTEP Monday, U.S. Sen. John Cornyn got a briefing about the newly created Border Security and Immigration Center located on campus.

"I believe can perform a vital role in providing good information and scholarship for the policy makers at the national level, at the state level and the local level," said Cornyn.

Cornyn said one of the biggest problems is the running of guns from the U.S. into Mexico, something he even admitted he needed more information about.

"I do know it is an ongoing concern of law enforcement officials in Mexico, and certainly the viciousness and violence of cartels is a something that is a little hard for people on this side to comprehend," said Cornyn.

On campus Monday, El Pasoans KFOX spoke to said they are proud to have the center at UTEP.

"I think that it is good here because, you know, the people here know about illegals and guns and trafficking crimes and all that," said John Henry from Northeast El Paso.

Many were surprised to here about the gun trafficking flowing in the opposite direction.

"I didn't know that, I thought guns, most of them were coming from there to here," said Henry.

"That's scary. That's kind of scary. Everyday someone is dying, and somebody needs to do something about that," said Josh Rhyanes, a UTEP freshman.
