Chuck is a member of the Banking Committee and Chairman of the
Economic Policy Subcommittee. The Banking Committee oversees the
Senate's work on a wide range of issues that are of particular importance
to the people of New York. Specifically, it must approve all legislation
relating to the following areas:
- Banks, banking, and financial institutions.
- Control of prices of commodities, rents and services.
- Deposit insurance.
- Economic stabilization and defense production.
- Export and foreign trade promotion.
- Export controls.
- Federal monetary policy, including the Federal Reserve System.
- Financial aid to commerce and industry.
- Issuance and redemption of notes.
- Money and credit, including currency and coinage.
- Nursing home construction.
- Public and private housing (including veterans housing).
From his seat on the Banking Committee, Chuck has recently fought
predatory lending, sponsored the Commuter
Benefits Equity Act to reduce air pollution and road congestion
and save money for millions of New Yorkers, and battled to maintain
sanctions against Iran and Libya to ensure our security against
terrorism.
The Economic
Policy Subcommittee is responsible for guaranteeing the long-term
prosperity and stability of the U.S. economy and for overseeing
the Federal
Reserve Board, perhaps the government's most important agency.
