Sutton Votes for Relief from High Energy Costs

WASHINGTON, D.C. - Today, Congresswoman Betty Sutton (D-OH) voted for three measures to provide relief from the skyrocketing cost of energy: the Saving Energy through Public Transportation Act, the Responsible Federal Oil and Gas Lease Act and The Energy Markets Emergency Act

The Saving Energy through Public Transportation Act passed the house by a vote of 322 to 98. This measure will provide critical funding to public transportation systems, giving people alternatives to paying for record high gasoline.

"With the price of gas over $4 a gallon across the country, public transportation is proving to be an increasingly important and affordable alternative to driving. By providing critical support for our public transportation systems, this legislation will allow even more people to take advantage of these services, saving Americans money on gas, cutting fuel consumption and helping to reduce pollution by taking cars off the road," said Congresswoman Sutton.

Many local providers are being strained by large increases in ridership. This legislation will help them meet this expanding demand for service.

Robert K. Pfaff, Executive Director of METRO RTA in Akron, OH said: "We have 48 fewer line service buses than we did in 2001,many of our bus routes have standing room only, and our major park and ride lots are full. This funding is needed to ensure our community will continue to get to work, school, and medical services. We thank Representative Sutton for her work on this bill ensuring we can continue to meet the mobility needs of our community."

Overall funding for public transportation in Ohio will increase by over $44 million:

  • Akron, OH will receive an additional $2,256,372
  • Cleveland, OH will receive an additional $10,763,818
  • Lorain--Elyria, OH will receive an additional $943,698

Congresswoman Sutton also voted in favor of two other measures today that will help deal with the energy crisis: the Responsible Federal Oil and Gas Lease Act, or "Use it or Lose it" legislation, and the Energy Markets Emergency Act.

  • H.R. 6377 The Energy Markets Emergency Act: this legislation directs the Commodity Futures Trading Commission to use it full authority and most potent emergency tools to curtail excessive speculation and other practices distorting the energy market. Rampant speculation has been cited as one cause of the spike in gas prices.

Unfortunately due to large Republican opposition these measures were unable to pass with the required two-thirds vote.
