WASHINGTON, D.C. – House Majority Whip James E. Clyburn today released the following statement in response to comments made by President Bush earlier today regarding the Foreign Intelligence Surveillance Act (FISA).
“It’s time for the President and congressional Republicans to end their misleading and alarmist rhetoric on FISA. Two weeks ago, the President opposed and House Republicans defeated an extension of the Protect America Act, yet today the President wanted the law extended. What changed in two weeks?
“The Bush administration admitted this weekend that the intelligence community currently has all the resources, tools, and authority they need to monitor the actions of those individuals who seek to do us and our country harm. Yet today, the President said we’re under threat. Which is it?
“Although Republicans refuse to participate, House and Senate Democrats are continuing to negotiate new FISA legislation that both protects our country from terrorist threat and upholds the Constitution.
“President Bush and House Republicans must stop playing politics with the nation’s security and work with the Democratic Leadership on a FISA bill that safeguards our civil liberties, protects our homeland, and helps secure our borders.”
