Dingell on Russian Nuclear Pact Being Sent to Congress
Washington, D.C. – Rep. John D. Dingell (D-MI), the Chairman of the Committee on Energy and Commerce, issued the following statement after the Administration sent the recently negotiated “123” nuclear agreement with Russia to Congress for approval.
“Last year, the House voted overwhelmingly in support of legislation that would prohibit U.S. nuclear cooperation agreements with countries that support Iran’s nuclear and missile programs, unless Iran has ceased efforts to design or acquire a nuclear explosive, or nuclear and missile assistance to Iran has been terminated by such country.
“It is unfortunate that the President would ignore this clear, unequivocal and bipartisan signal by asking Congress to approve a 30-year agreement with Russia without answering key questions about Russian institutions supporting Iran’s nuclear and missile programs.
“This premature action suggests the Administration is more concerned with the 90-day Congressional review clock than ensuring Russia’s activities are not at odds with our nation’s nuclear nonproliferation policy.”
