Military Academy Appointments

There are five military service academies in the United States.  Through Congressman Blumenauer's office, you can apply for a nomination to four of the academies (the Coast Guard Academy does not require congressional nominations).   You begin the application process by contacting the academies you wish to attend and starting a pre-candidate file with them.  The academies (and their links) are:

Please make sure you meet the important qualifications listed below:

Service Academy Qualifying Factors

  • Must be at least 17 but not yet 22 years of age.
  • Must be a citizen of the United States.
  • Must not be married, pregnant or have legal obligation to support a child.
  • Physical requirements vary according to academy.
  • Academic record:
    • minimum SAT scores of 500/Verbal and 555/Math or minimum ACT scores of 24/English, 25/Math 24/Reading and 25/Science Reasoning.
    • rank in upper 40% of class
    • outstanding participation and performance in high school extra-curricular activities (athletic and non-athletic).

Summary of the Nomination and Appointment Process

The following schedule may be used as a guide to the timing of important steps in the nomination and appointment process:

Beginning in March Congressman Blumenauer begins to receive applications for nominations to the service academies.
September through December Congressman Blumenauer accepts applications and screens applicants. Congressman Blumenauer sends out press releases announcing application deadlines.
September through January Academies provide periodic applicant evaluations to members of Congress based on the evaluation of the information self-reported by the applicant. In late January or early February, status reports reflect validated information on the candidates.
Beginning in October and November Academies send out early offers of admission/appointment and Letters of Assurance. Advance notice of appointments will be given to congressional offices by academies.
November 1st  Deadline to submit application for nomination to Congressman Blumenauer
November 1st Congressman Blumenauer submits names of nominees to the appropriate agencies representing the academies.
December through January Congressman Blumenauer sends out press releases announcing nominees.
By late April Academies have offered the majority of appointments.
May through June Academies offer additional appointments to replace candidates who decline their appointments.
Late June or early July Newly appointed classes enter the academies.
