Opportunities - Senate Page Program
High school juniors, ages 16 or 17, are invited to apply to become a Senate Page. The Page program offers young Alaskans the opportunity to attend classes in Washington, D.C., while gaining a unique perspective of American government. Interacting with students from across the country, pages experience new ideas, perspectives, and issues.

While performing their Senate duties, Pages meet some of the nation’s most prominent leaders and witness, firsthand, the political debates of the United State Senate. Pages play an important role in the day-to-day operation of the Senate and their schedule can be long and tedious. As a result, Pages must have a mature attitude and superior academic discipline.

Additional Information

Applicants must be a junior in high school between the ages of 16 and 17 on the date of appointment. For the summer sessions, junior status means being between grades 10 and 11 or between grades 11 and 12. Applicants must have a minimum cumulative grade point average of 3.0. All applicants are expected to be in good health with current immunizations.

Pages are political appointments and serve their respective caucuses. Therefore, applicants applying with Senator Stevens must be philosophically comfortable working with Republicans.

There are four sessions: Fall, Spring, and two sessions during the summer. Fall semester generally lasts from early September to mid January. Spring semester begins in mid-January and generally ends in early June. The early Summer session spans the month of June and the late Summer session lasts the month of July.

Pages receive a salary based on an annual level of $21,978.

Housing is provided at the Senate Page residence. All Pages are required to live at the residence hall. The building is located only two blocks from the Senate office buildings. The cost is $600 per month and is automatically deducted from a Page’s pay. Housing includes breakfast and dinner every day.

Pages are required to provide appropriate clothing.

There are breaks for Thanksgiving (one week), Christmas (two weeks), and Easter (one week). During these weeks, the Page residence is closed. Pages must make arrangement to go home or stay with friends or relatives in the area. The Senate does not cover transportation or lodging expenses during these breaks.

Pages serving during the Fall and Spring semesters will be required to attend morning classes. These classes are from 6:15 AM to 9:45 AM each morning. Following class, a Page’s Senate responsibilities will last until 4:00 PM or until the Senate adjourns for the day, whichever is later.
