Statement of Senator Barack Obama on the House Passage of the Consumer Product Safety Modernization Act

Wednesday, July 30, 2008

WASHINGTON, D.C. - U.S. Senator Barack Obama today released the following statement after the House of Representatives passed the Consumer Product Safety Modernization Act (H.R. 4040):

"Keeping our children safe from dangerous products must be a top priority, and I commend my colleagues in the House for passing the Consumer Product Safety Modernization Act today.

"This Act includes important provisions that will strengthen our government's ability to protect America's most vulnerable citizens. I am proud this bill also includes provisions that address preventable lead poisoning in children. More than two years ago, I introduced the Lead Free Toys Act with Congressman Henry Waxman to ban lead in toys and other children's products. After millions of toys were recalled last summer and so many of our children were placed in harm's way, this legislation could not come at a more urgent time.

"We must continue to do everything we can to protect and promote the health of our children, and I call on the Senate to pass this legislation as soon as possible."
