Obama Statement on the President Signing a Law to Place a Statue of Rosa Parks in the U.S. Capitol
WASHINGTON - U.S. Senator Barack Obama (D-IL) today released the following statement about the President's signing of legislation to place a statue of Rosa Parks in the U.S. Capitol's Statuary Hall:
"Rosa Parks held no public office, but when the history of this country is written, her name and her legacy will be remembered long after the names of senators and presidents have been forgotten," said Obama. "So it is fitting that her legacy, her hopes, and her struggles be immortalized alongside statues of men and women whose hearts she helped change."
Senator Obama joined with Senator John Kerry (D-MA) in introducing the Senate version of the legislation. Rosa Parks will be the first African American honored with a statue in Statuary Hall.
