FEDERAL INVESTMENT IN GRIFFISS TOPS $20 MILLION

Arcuri Announces an Additional $1.1 Million for Redevelopment of Griffiss Airfield
September 5, 2007

Washington, DC -- Today, U.S. Representative Michael A. Arcuri (D-Utica) announced that the Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) has awarded an additional $1.16 million to Oneida County for continued redevelopment efforts at the Griffiss Airfield in Rome.  This is the second installment during this fourth round of funding for Griffiss through the Military Airport Program (MAP) – bringing the total federal investment to over $20 million in MAP funding since 2004.

“The Griffiss Park is a major economic engine for our region and I will continue to work at the federal level to bring much-needed development resources back to Griffiss,” said Arcuri, a member of the House Transportation and Infrastructure Committee which is responsible for authorizing funds for MAP.  “This grant will allow Oneida County to continue making critical structural improvements at Griffiss Airfield, including constructing an access road and terminal building. MAP funding is a critical part of Griffiss expansion and redevelopment and this latest round marks a $20 million federal investment in economic growth and development right here in Oneida County.”

“The transformation taking place at the Griffiss Airfield is laying the foundation for lasting economic success in our region,” said Oneida County Executive Anthony J. Picente, Jr. “This funding secured by Congressman Arcuri will help Oneida County continue to construct and improve the aviation facilities so that Oneida County can have a transportation center that will serve as a catalyst for growth across the region. I want to thank Congressman Arcuri for securing these much-needed federal dollars that will help us build a stronger County.”

The FAA awarded Griffiss Airfield funding for construction of an access road and terminal building, as well as installation of an instrument approach aid (Navaids (ILS/MALSR)), and the rehabilitation of taxiway lighting and taxiway marking and signage improvements at the Griffiss Airfield.

Last week, Arcuri announced $1.7 million (first installment of fourth round MAP funding) for rehabilitation and improvements to the snow removal equipment building. The funding will be used to improve the roof, siding, and insulation at the aging building. Funds will also go to apron rehabilitation needed for aircraft to access the fuel facilities and gain access to the building.
