Elk City Industry Tour

Elk City, Idaho
August 26, 2008

Current Event, August 26, 2008

The August State work period provided me with the opportunity to make the drive into Elk City. This small community, completely enveloped by the Nez Perce National Forest, is an example of one Idaho town that has not given up on the timber industry.

During my time there, I witnessed how the people of Elk City have adapted and worked to capitalize on small timber sales to rejuvenate their economy. The small Saw-Mizer they currently operate utilizes nearly every square inch of timber. Any scraps will in the coming years be burned in a new biomass plant scheduled to break ground in 2010.

I am excited about the determination and innovation of the people of Elk City and I look forward to watching this community prosper in the years ahead.
