Idaho Ethanol Processing

Caldwell, Idaho

Current Event, August 13, 2008

During the August State work period I toured the Idaho Ethanol Processing facility in Caldwell. This facility converts high-starch organic wastes, like those found at Simplot's neighboring potato processing plant, into ethanol to be used for fuel. It also creates a byproduct of high-protein feed for livestock producers.

Idaho Ethanol Processing currently produces approximately four million gallons of ethanol per year, but is looking to expand production in the future. The plant is seen as a bridge to our future energy production, because it is fueled by potato waste, as opposed to corn, thereby lessening the burden on our food and feed supply. I am working to ensure this business has the federal support necessary to achieve this expansion and help us add more "food chain friendly" advanced biofuel to our country's renewable energy portfolio.
