Pulaski Trail Fire Meeting

Wallace, ID
August 4, 2007

Current Event, August 4, 2007

I recently visited the Pulaski Trail in Wallace to check on the progress of the project to restore an historic trail.

The trail leads to an abandoned mine shaft—the Pulaski Tunnel—where Forest Service ranger Ed Pulaski led a group of firefighters who had been trapped in a raging fire.

Over the years the tunnel and trail had fallen into disrepair, but local residents took the initiative to work with private landowners and other interested parties to commemorate this historic site. This local collaboration was coupled with federal funding I helped secure to help get the project off the ground.

Working to make sure that Idaho's critical needs are met is a big part of my job as Idaho's senator. My Idaho Initiatives page lists every project I have secured through the appropriations process since I began serving on the Appropriations Committee in 1997. I believe I am the only Senator to provide a comprehensive list like this.
