Service Academies

"The United States Service Academies offer the perfect opportunity to pursue an excellent education while serving your country. It takes a great deal of commitment, dedication, and leadership to make it at the academies, but the rewards are well worth the hard work. I urge anyone who believes they meet the qualifications to apply for nomination to a service academy." - Senator Kit Bond

Military service to the United States is an honor. Young men and women who want to help defend our country can apply to the service academies. While there are several ways to join the armed services, the academies offer a uniquely rewarding experience, developing both strong leadership skills and providing an excellent undergraduate education.

Missouri has a tradition of producing outstanding military leaders. Many of these leaders, such as General John J. Pershing and General Omar Bradley, began their military careers at the service academies.

In order to gain admission, the academies require applicants to receive nominations from Members of Congress or other national leaders.

Requirements
Applicants must be legal Missouri residents and United States citizens, at least 17 years of age but not past their 23 birthday when they enter the academy, unmarried, and with no children or other legal dependents.

Selection criteria include SAT/ACT scores, class rank, GPA, school records, recommendations by teachers and/or counselors, extracurricular and athletic activities, leadership potential, and motivation. Senator Bond also requires an essay explaining why you want to attend an academy.

Deadline for nomination applications:
The deadline for the receipt of a completed application by Senator Bond’s office is the first Friday in December; however, because the process can be lengthy, interested applicants are encouraged to begin their on-line application or hard-copy application process early. Senator Bond does not hold interviews and nominations will be submitted to the academies by January.

For more information:
Both on-line and hard-copy applications are acceptable. To obtain a mail-in nomination packet contact Senator Bond’s office at 300 S. Jefferson, Suite 401, Springfield, MO 65806, or call (417) 864-8258.

The mail-in application forms are also available for download at the bottom of the page.

In addition to submitting an application to Senator Bond, you should also consider applying to Senator McCaskill and your own Congressperson for a nomination. Expanding the number of applications may add to your chances of obtaining a nomination from at least one member of the delegation. You may also apply to the Office of the Vice President of the United States.

Direct application to the academies:
The academy application process requires that you apply both to your Congressional offices for a nomination and directly to the academies for an actual appointment. Applying to all of the academies may improve your chances of receiving at least one appointment offer. Academy inquiry cards are available through high school counselors, and academy liaison officers in Missouri. You should contact the academies directly for candidate packets. The United States Coast Guard Academy does not require congressional nominations. If you are interested in attending the USCG Academy, you should contact the Academy directly.
