UTEP RECEIVES $111,000 RESEARCH GRANT
, DC - The Department of Health and Human Services through the National Institute of Diabetes and Digestive and Kidney Diseases has awarded a $111,000 research grant to the Department of Biological Sciences at the University of Texas at El Paso (UTEP), Congressman Reyes, D-El Paso, announced today.
The find will support a project entitled "Characteristics of Metabolically Obese but Normal-weight Hispanic Women," under the direction of Chantal Vella. The project is designed to encourage basic and clinical biomedical research and research training and career developments in diabetes, endocrinology and metabolic diseases. A key strength of the project is to stimulate and foster scientific technological innovation through cooperative research and development carried out between small business concerns and research institutions.
"I am pleased that the Department of Health and Services has granted funding for this project," Congressman Reyes said. "This grant will allow UTEP the opportunity to gain a deeper understanding of diseases, such as diabetes, and their underlying causes which could lead to the development of new treatments and therapies."
The U.S. Department of Health is an independent government agency that seeks to protect the health of all Americans and providing essential human services, especially for those who are least able to help themselves.
