Full Committee and Subcommittee Memberships

Following is a list of the Members of the full Committee on Energy and Commerce and each of its Subcommittees for the 107th Congress.  The full Committee approved Republican and Democratic subcommittee assignments on February 7, 2001.

On April 10, 2002, the full Committee approved a resolution adjusting the Republican memberships of the standing subcommittees for the balance of the Congress.  The membership changes are reflected in the lists below.

* On February 15, 2002, Rep. Steve Largent resigned from the Committee on Energy and Commerce and the House of Representatives.  On March 20, 2002, the House of Representatives approved the appointment of Rep. Fletcher to fill the committee vacancy created by Rep. Steve Largent's resignation. (H.Res. 375)

COMMERCE, TRADE, AND CONSUMER PROTECTION

* On April 10, 2002, the full committee approved the assignment of Rep. Ernie Fletcher to the Commerce, Trade, and Consumer Protection Subcommittee.  The committee also approved the re-assignment of Rep. Steve Buyer from the Commerce, Trade, and Consumer Protection Subcommittee to the Energy and Air Quality Subcommittee.

Jurisdiction:  Interstate and foreign commerce, including all trade matters within the jurisdiction of the full committee; regulation of commercial practices (the FTC), including sports-related matters; consumer affairs and consumer protection, including privacy matters generally; consumer product safety (the CPSC); and product liability; and motor vehicle safety; and regulation of travel, tourism, and time.

* On February 28, 2001, the full committee  approved the re-assignment of Rep. John Shadegg from the Telecommunications and the Internet Subcommittee to the Energy and Air Quality Subcommittee, by unanimous consent.

**On April 10, 2002, the full committee approved the designation of Rep. Shimkus as Vice Chairman of the Energy and Air Quality Subcommittee.

***On April 10, 2002, the full committee approved the assignment of Rep. Buyer to the Energy and Air Quality Subcommittee to fill the vacancy created by Rep. Steve Largent's resignation from the House of Representatives on February 15, 2002.

Jurisdiction:  National energy policy generally; fossil energy, renewable energy resources and synthetic fuels; energy conservation; energy information; energy regulation and utilization; utility issues and regulation of nuclear facilities; interstate energy compacts; nuclear energy and waste; The Clean Air Act; and all laws, programs, and government activities affecting such matters.

* On March 19, 2001, Rep. Edward J. Markey resigned from the Subcommittee on Environment and Hazardous Materials.  On March 28, 2001, the full committee approved the appointment of Rep. Peter Deutsch to fill the vacancy, by unanimous consent.

** On April 10, 2002, the full committee approved the assignment of Rep. Ernie Fletcher to the Environment and Hazardous Materials Subcommittee.  The full committee also approved the designation of Rep. Fossella as Vice Chairman of the Subcommittee.

Jurisdiction: Environmental protection in general, including the Safe Drinking Water Act and risk assessment matters; solid waste, hazardous waste and toxic substances, including Superfund and RCRA; mining, oil, gas, and coal combustion wastes; and noise pollution control.

Jurisdiction:  Public health and quarantine; hospital construction; mental health and research; biomedical programs and health protection in general, including Medicaid and national health insurance; food and drugs; and drug abuse.

Jurisdiction:  Responsibility for oversight of agencies, departments, and programs within the jurisdiction of the full committee, and for conducting investigations within such jurisdiction.
