  • * On February 13, 1997, Bill Richardson (D-NM) resigned from the House of Representatives to become United States Ambassador to the United Nations. The House subsequently agreed to H.Res. 58, electing certain members to the standing committees of the House, which included the election of Mr. Pallone (D-NJ) to the Committee on Commerce (to rank directly above Sherrod Brown (D-OH)). Previously, Mr. Pallone had been on sabbatical leave from the Committee since the beginning of the 105th Congress.
  • ** On August 3, 1998, Representative Heather Wilson (R-NM) was elected to the Committee on Commerce for the remainder of the 105th Congress, pursuant to H.Res. 515, which passed the House on August 3, 1998. Representative Wilson fills the vacancy created by the resignation of Representative Klug from the Committee, which was effective August 3, 1998.

Pursuant to H.Res. 515, which passed the House on August 3, 1998, Representative Heather Wilson (R-NM) was elected to the Committee on Commerce. On August 5, 1998, the Committee on Commerce approved the Republican memberships of the subcommittees, as selected by the Republican Conference. Representative Wilson was selected for the Subcommittee on Telecommunications, Trade, and Consumer Protection.

Jurisdiction: Interstate and foreign telecommunications including, but not limited to all telecommunication and information transmission by broadcast, radio, wire, microwave, satellite, or other mode; interstate and foreign commerce, including trade matters within the jurisdiction of the full committee; regulation of commercial practices (FTC); consumer affairs, and consumer protection in general; consumer product safety (the CPSC); and product liability; and motor vehicle safety.
