Honolulu, Hawaii – U.S. Senator Daniel K. Inouye announced today that a federal grant in the amount of $1.5 million has been awarded to the Cellular Bioengineering, Inc. in Honolulu, for the continuation of a gel based surface radiation decontaminant project.

Through this U.S. Department of Energy grant, Cellular Bioengineering will be able to continue the development of a low-cost, effective, and safe product aimed at the decontamination of material that carries plutonium, uranium, americium, and other transuranic elements and heavy metals.

“The continued development of this hydrogel technology has significant potential for environmental remediation, including the decontamination of surface areas after a radiological incident, decontamination of radioactive particles in wounds, and for mold mitigation” said Senator Inouye.

Senator Inouye is a member of the Energy and Water Appropriations Subcommittee.
