WASHINGTON, D.C. -U.S. Sen. James M. Inhofe (R-Okla.) announced today a $500,000 grant from the U.S. Economic Development Administration for the Indian Nation Council of Governments (INCOG).  These funds will be used for the Arkansas River Corridor Master Plan and specifically for engineering design and permitting for retrofits to the Zink Dam and two low water dams near Sand Springs and Jenks. As the Chairman of EPW in 2004, Senator Inhofe authored legislation to reauthorize the Economic Development Administration. Earlier this week, the EPW Committee conducted a hearing highlighting EDA investments in Oklahoma.

"I am pleased to announce this economic development investment to carry out the engineering plans at these three low water dams," said Senator Inhofe. "I commend all the people who have come together from a variety of backgrounds to improve the structure and quality of the Arkansas River Corridor. The ongoing development and maintenance of the Arkansas River Corridor generates new economic opportunities that we can all be excited about.

"This investment is another example of the beneficial work being done through the Economic Development Administration. As Chairman of the Senate Environment and Public Works Committee in 2004, I was proud to have authored legislation to reauthorize the Economic Development Administration. Taken all together, EDA's public works and economic adjustment grants awarded in Oklahoma over the past five and a half years have resulted in almost 9,000 jobs being created or saved.  With an investment of about $24.6 million, we have leveraged almost 29 million in State and local dollars and more than 433 million in private sector dollars."

Rich Brierre, Executive Director, Indian Nations Council of Governments: "We are delighted that, EDA will invest $500,000 in engineering design services allowing Tulsa County and its river partners to continue momentum in implementing the Arkansas River Master Plan through public infrastructure improvements to Zink Dam and construction of additional low water dams.  We thank Senator Inhofe, Congressman Sullivan, and EDA Regional Administrator Garza for their continued support."

Senator Inhofe has long supported development on the Arkansas River through Tulsa and surrounding communities.  In the Water Resources Development Act of 2007, he included a provision which authorizes $50,000,000 to carry out the ecosystem restoration, recreation, and flood damage reduction components of the Arkansas River Corridor Master Plan in coordination with Tulsa County, surrounding communities, and INCOG.

According to the announcement from the U.S. Department of Commerce the total project cost is $1,000,000. The investment funds engineering services to determine strategy for re-constructing three low water dams in the Arkansas River corridor of Tulsa County. The services will include preliminary design, technical studies, and preparation and submittal of the Clean Water Act Section 404 Permit Application to the Corps of Engineers, as well as other permits as needed.
