Issues & Legislation - Hot Topic - Rising Gas Prices

I am very concerned about high gas prices. We need a comprehensive solution to our energy crisis that is based on conservation, alternative energy, exploration and market fairness. We need policies that provide short-term relief, as well as long-term solutions.

High gas prices are primarily driven by a supply-demand imbalance in global energy markets. To bring prices down, we must increase supply and decrease demand.

To decrease demand for oil, I strongly support energy conservation efforts and investments in alternative energy research. I have co-sponsored numerous bills to pursue those goals, including the Clean Energy Investment Act, Climate Security Act and Clean Energy Tax Stimulus Act.

I also believe we should increase supply by making better use of American energy resources in remote areas of Alaska, offshore on the Outer Continental Shelf, and in oil shale in the Western United States.

But we should not explore for more petroleum at the expense of alternative energy sources. We must pursue all available resources, including innovative batteries, nuclear, fuel cells, clean coal, natural gas, wind, solar, geothermal, hydropower and biofuels.

For immediate relief, I support releasing one-third of the Strategic Petroleum Reserve. This would increase supply, drive down prices and signal to the market and speculators that the U.S. government will take action to address high gas prices.

It is also important to protect consumers from illegal market manipulation and corporate corruption. That’s why I am calling for an Oil and Gas Market Fraud Task Force to police speculators and ensure that energy markets are functioning properly.

With North Carolina families getting hammered by skyrocketing prices at the pump, we need to use everything and the kitchen sink - conservation, alternative energy, exploration and market fairness - to end our addiction to foreign oil and lower gas prices.
