Lampson Coordinates Local And Federal Hurricane Preparedness

(Stafford, T.X.)- Hurricane Ike’s current forecast projects the storm will make landfall in Texas on Saturday morning with sustained winds above 130 mph.  Rep. Nick Lampson, D-Stafford, is wasting no time to make sure Texans are safe and every precaution is taken to assure an efficient, organized response to the storm.

“Houston has had several close calls this hurricane season that make it easy to become complacent about the real danger of hurricanes,” said Rep. Lampson “It is crucial that we keep up our guard and take every precaution to be sure that we minimize the effect a storm of this magnitude would have on our community.”

Over the past 48 hours, Rep. Lampson has been in contact with federal, state, and local officials to coordinate efforts at all levels of government.  Rep. Lampson urged federal agencies today to ensure that they are prepared for the potential threat from Hurricane Ike.

Congressman Lampson coordinated with David Paulison, Chief Administrator of the Federal Emergency Management Agency. The two discussed triage needs, ensuring that food banks do not run out of food, and how to prevent I-10 from backing up should an evacuation be called. The two also talked about time needed for the evacuation of those with special needs and whether military aid would be required in a potential evacuation of Houston.

Representative Lampson urged city, state, and federal officials to be ready for all emergency-scenarios including evacuation should it become necessary. Officials indicated that an evacuation decision would be made Wednesday.

Hurricane Ike threatens to make landfall between the Texas coast and Northern Mexico, though the current projected path looks as if it will not threaten local citizens, it is still important to monitor Ike’s progress and have emergency plans in place. Hurricane’s paths are notorious for making rapid shifts which make new areas vulnerable to them.

The National Hurricane center suggests making a disaster supply kit that includes provisions and supplies for 3 to 7 days. The center also suggests having a family disaster plan in place. This includes having a single point of contact and meeting place for families should they be separated.

“I will continue to work with local, state, and federal officials through the week to ensure that we will be prepared should Hurricane Ike threaten our area.” said Rep. Lampson.
