A Message from the Chairman Welcome to the Senate Committee on the Judiciary's new website. Established in 1816, the Judiciary Committee is one of the oldest and historically rich Committees in Congress. Today, some of the most pressing issues considered by the Committee include anti-terrorism measures, trademark, copyright and patent laws, immigration policy and presidential nominations to fill vacancies on the federal judiciary and in executive departments. In addition, the Committee fulfills a vital oversight role, monitoring the activities of the Department of Justice and other agencies, including the Federal Bureau of Investigation. On this website, you will find a complete schedule of Judiciary Committee hearings and business meetings, as well as information about legislation considered by the Committee. A complete list of Committee-published reports related to pending legislation is also available. You will also find a listing of other Committee documents, including oversight correspondence sent by members of the Committee. Visit the resources page for more information. When the original colonies ratified the Constitution, Americans chartered a nation of laws, and established Congress as a co-equal branch in our government. In the spirit of making our government open and accessible to the constituents we represent, Ranking Member Specter and I hope you will find the resources available here useful. Welcome to the Senate Judiciary Committee.

Did You Know? In 1872, Susan B. Anthony petitioned the Judiciary Committee for reduction of a fine imposed by the State of New York imposed after her arrest for voting in a State election. In 1880, she testified before the Committee advocating for women's voting rights. Still it would be another forty years until the 19th Amendment guaranteeing women the right to vote was ratified in 1920. 09/11/2008 02:00 PM --TIME Change-- Executive Business Meeting 09/10/2008 10:00 AM New Strategies for Combating Violent Crime: Drawing Lessons from Recent Experience 09/09/2008 02:15 PM Protecting the Right to Vote: Oversight of the Department of Justice's Preparations for the 2008 General Election |
