U.S. REP. GABRIELLE GIFFORDS TO PARTICIPATE IN OPENING OF NATIONAL CENTER FOR BORDER SECURITY AND IMMIGRATION

TUCSON – U.S. Rep. Gabrielle Giffords on Wednesday will participate in the opening of the National Center for Border Security and Immigration at the University of Arizona.

Research at the center will focus on new technologies such as detection, surveillance, screening, data fusion, sensor networks and other technologies. The center also will provide research on border risk management, population dynamics, immigration policy, law enforcement, international governance and related legal issues.

The UA will lead the research functions of the center, and the University of Texas at El Paso will lead its educational components. The center will receive more than $16 million over six years.

Also participating in the opening will be Jay Cohen, Undersecretary for Science and Technology, U.S. Department of Homeland Security; U.S. Rep. Raúl M. Grijalva; UA President Robert N. Shelton; Jay Nunamaker, director of the National Center for Border Security and Immigration, Research; and Elyse Golob, executive director of the National Center for Border Security and Immigration.
