Passman's book is one of the best. Bar-none it's the best music industry "starter's guide". Passman nails the big points, uses humor to explain difficult concepts, and even maps out the ways to read/engage it. The only downside? It's not "All You Need to Know" in the 21st century.

The book lacks depth on some key areas (to be frank, it'd be hard for one book could hold it all). More emphasis is put on deals that most artists will never see, while important elements like online video (YouTube), streaming models, "DIY" and the like that would have greater impact for the masses are less noticeable. It'd be great to see him supplement this in the next iteration (these are released every 3 years) and by then we'll probably be onto another outlet.

Must-read as a starter guide, just don't expect it to be "All You Need to Know". There's more to the industry than is contained therein.

Donald Passman provides lots of information and a thorough understanding of his knowledge about the music industry on many aspects of how the music industry works, the changes that have taken place, and the new challenges the music industry has had to adapt too. He includes plenty of examples on the different levels and association between music, film, television, PRO, and they're functions within the industry of making music a viable product for artists, record companies, film companies, and consumers alike.

The book is a must read for anyone interested in getting a good understanding on how the music business works, and more importantly what has changed with the new business model in producing, marketing, and selling an artist's, songwriter's, or a composer's music.

As a required course book from Berkleemusic, the resources and Mr. Passman's knowledge of the music and film industry puts into prospective the many challenges artist, songwriters, and composers will encounter, and how to he provide many example and explanations on the steps required to becoming better prepared for what the industry requires in order to be successful in the music buisness.

I find this book to be accurate to current industry standards and is amazingly an "easy read" considering the complex subject matter it covers. This is a must read for anyone planning to pursue a music career.

Passman has put together an amazing book here that is basically a Bible for the music business. Essential reading if you want to grasp everything that's going on. When my partner and i started our music blog Musformation.com, this was a very helpful book.

If you're interested in gaining more fans, Musformation has must released a book titled: [...]. It covers more details about specific technologies that you can use to get ahead. Hopefully both might help you!
