Man shot in back at Brooklyn barbershop

A 44-year-old man was shot in the back at a South Baltimore barbershop Thursday, police said.

The victim, who was not identified by police, was hospitalized in critical condition at about 5:47 p.m. after the shooting in the first block of W. Patapsco Ave. in Brooklyn, police said.

Police said the victim and another man got into an argument inside the shop that led to the shooting. It wasn't clear whether he was shot inside or outside, police said, but officers found him lying injured on the sidewalk.

A person of interest was detained at the scene, police said.

Homicide detectives were called to the scene due to the severity of the victim's injuries. Anyone with information may call 410-396-2100.

Baltimore officer charged with misconduct, perjury

A Baltimore police officer has been charged with misconduct and perjury in connection with an arrest made one month after he was publicly thanked by the city's mayor and police commissioner for his work seizing a handgun.

Prosecutors say in January 2013, officers in a covert location directed an arrest team to detain a man observed making a hand-to-hand drug deal. Officer Steven J. Slack allegedly placed the wrong person under arrest and was informed by the observing officers that he had the wrong person, but wrote up arrest documents for the man anyway, prosecutors said in a statement.

No explanation was provided for why prosecutors believe Slack knowingly pressed forward with arresting the wrong man, and no details were provided about where the arrest occurred or the outcome of the man's case.

Slack, who joined the police department in 2006, faces charges of misconduct and perjury, and was charged through a criminal information, allowing him to avoid arrest. Attempts to reach Slack...

FBI agent in evidence-tampering probe was part of BGF investigation

A federal judge ordered Thursday that a high-profile case revolving around the Black Guerrilla Family gang's takeover of the city jail will not be affected by the involvement of an FBI agent who is under investigation for allegedly tampering with evidence in Washington D.C.

Attorney Carmen D. Hernandez, who is representing jail employee Michelle McNair, said earlier Thursday that the involvement of Special Agent Matthew Lowry is a "potential serious issue" in the case, which is slated to go to trial Monday in U.S. District Court.

The Washington Post has reported that Lowry is alleged to have taken drugs being stored in a lab for a court case, and was found slumped over in his vehicle in September with drug evidence bags, heroin and two firearms. Since then, the U.S. Attorney's Office in Washington has dropped nearly 30 cases involving Lowry, and others are under review.

But officials with the U.S. Attorney's office said that at a motions hearing Thursday, prosecutors said Lowry's...
