Previous Quarterly Coal Data

The Quarterly Coal Report (QCR) provides detailed quarterly data on U.S. coal production, exports, imports, receipts, prices, consumption, quality, stocks, and refined coal. Data on U.S. coke production, consumption, stocks, imports, and exports are also provided. All data for 2012 and prior years are final. All data for 2013 and 2014 are preliminary.

Highlights for second quarter 2014:

  • U.S. coal production during second quarter 2014 totaled 245.8 million short tons. This was 0.3% higher than the previous quarter, and 1.2% higher than second quarter 2013. Production in the Western Region, which represented about 53.4% of total U.S. coal production in second quarter 2014, totaled 131.4 million short tons (3.5% higher than second quarter 2013).

  • Second quarter 2014 U.S. coal exports (24.6 million short tons) dropped 11.4% from first quarter 2014, and dropped 16.5% from second quarter 2013. Coal exports have declined for five quarters in a row. The average price of U.S. coal exports during the second quarter 2014 was $87.06 per short ton. Steam coal exports totaled 8.8 million short tons (19.2% lower than first quarter 2014); metallurgical coal exports totaled 15.8 million short tons (6.5% lower than first quarter 2014).

  • The U.S. continued to import coal primarily from Colombia (70.2%), Indonesia (14.4%), and Canada (7.8%). U.S. coal imports in second quarter 2014 increased to 3.5 million short tons from 2.4 million short tons in first quarter 2014.

Quarterly Coal Imports and Exports

  • U.S. coal consumption totaled 212.9 million short tons in second quarter 2014; this was 14.4% lower than the 248.6 million short tons reported in first quarter 2014 and 1.7% lower than the 216.5 million short tons reported in second quarter 2013. The electric power sector consumed about 92.5% of the total U.S. coal consumption in second quarter 2014.

  • Second quarter 2014 coal stocks grew to 180.6 million short tons from 165.4 million short tons at the end of first quarter 2014 (9.2% increase). Stocks in the electric power sector grew to 132.9 million short tons from 118.0 million short tons at the end of first quarter 2014, the first increase since the end of fourth quarter 2012.
