A man carrying a knife stabbed four people on an Amtrak train in Michigan Friday evening, police said. Niles, Michigan, police told NBC News the incident occurred around 7 p.m. and a 44-year-old suspect was taken into custody.
A bystander told NBC station WNDU that the suspect first attacked another man and then went after two women nearby.
"I was like 'Oh my God, he's punching the guy. I saw him bring his fist back up and I noticed there was something in his fist resembling a knife blade and bring it back down," a passenger on the train from Chicago to Port Huron, Michigan told WNDU. "He stopped stabbing the guy in front and he lurched forward towards these two other women."
Police did not release the condition of the victims, but a hospital official said one of the stabbing victims was in serious condition. Police did not release a motive in the attack and said the suspect is from Saginaw, Michigan.
Amtrak said in a statement it was trying to arrange alternate transportation for 172 passengers on the train, which runs daily between the two cities.
