Taylor Swift Understands Why Some People Hate ‘Welcome to New York’

And she thinks they're simply "asking a little much of a piece of a music"

Taylor Swift knows better than anyone that the haters are always gonna hate, hate, hate, hate, hate. In particular, they’ve been hating on the fact that she was named NYC’s global tourism ambassador, and they’ve also been hating on her new song “Welcome to New York.”

Okay, they haven’t exactly been “hating” on it as much as some have offered measured critiques. Critics have said the tune lacks “the sophistication, or substance, of Gotham-themed hits” by other artists; others said it “speaks only in empty cliches about big city life.” More generally, people who’ve lived in a New York much more gritty and challenging and crime-ridden (and much, much less luxurious) than the one recently inhabited by Swift simply scoffed at her depiction of the city and her apparent love for it.

Well, Tay-Tay understands why people feel that way. In a recent interview with Billboard (as the magazine’s Woman of the Year) she said the criticism has “absolutely” made her think differently. “But when you write a song, you’re writing about a momentary emotion,” she said. “If you can capture that and turn it into three-and-half minutes that feel like that emotion, that’s all you’re trying to do as a songwriter.”

Basically, she thinks maybe we all put too much pressure on her. “To take a song and try to apply it to every situation everyone is going through — economically, politically, in an entire metropolitan area — is asking a little much of a piece of a music,” she said.

Swift also made sure to debunk the idea that her relationship with New York is new. She grew up in Pennsylvania, just a few hours away, and would often come into New York as a kid for auditions and singing lessons. She also went to her first Knicks game at age 12 — for a halftime talent competition. “But I didn’t win because the kid who won sang ‘New York, New York,’ and I was like, ‘Here’s a song I wrote about a boy in my class …'”

Watch a Hockey Player Casually Slip the Word ‘Meow’ Into an Interview Seven Times

He pulls off the game from Super Troopers flawlessly

Kalamazoo Wings hockey player Ray Kaunisto decided to spice up an otherwise mundane interview by playing the “meow game” from the comedy Super Troopers. (For the uninitiated: the game comes from a scene in which a cop pulls over a driver and proceeds to sneak the word “meow” into the conversation as many times as possible. That’s it.)

Kaunisto does a respectable job, managing to meow seven times in a 40-second interview. As ESPN points out, reporter Ben Garrod seems to get the joke, but remains composed and doesn’t crack a smile until the interview’s over.

Alright, Boy Meets World fans (we’re looking at you, ’90s kids). If you haven’t watched Girl Meets World because you think it’s kind of weird the Disney Channel actually made that a show, or perhaps because you don’t own a TV, you might finally have a compelling reason to tune in.

That compelling reason is that all your favorite characters from Boy Meets World will appear in the second season! Well, some of your favorite characters. Most notably: Cory Matthews’ bestie Shawn Hunter (Rider Strong), his older brother Eric (Will Friedle) and his beloved teacher/mentor/neighbor/person who always somehow shows up in every single aspect of his life, Mr. Feeny (William Daniels.)

Ben Savage, who plays Cory, tweeted this photo, giving us a glimpse at the glorious reunion to come:

Also appearing in the holiday reunion episode, which airs today, Dec. 5, will be Cory’s parents Amy and Alan (Betsy Randle and William Russ), E! Online reports.

The Girl Meets World writers have been sharing snippets of information on Twitter to build up the hype for this special episode. For example:

And Then Here’s an Owl Going for a Swim in Lake Michigan

Could he be the avian Ryan Lochte? This video points to yes

Silly owl, your primary mode of transit is supposed to be flying, not swimming! But alas, here you are, doing what is essentially the butterfly stroke in the cold waters of Lake Michigan.

Chicago area photographer and birder Steve Spitzer captured the brief (but, come on, totally riveting) footage this week in the city’s Rogers Park neighborhood, WGN reports. The Great Horned Owl had apparently been forced into the water by two peregrine falcons — but clearly, he ended up making the best of the situation.

Here’s What the New Star Wars Would Look Like if Wes Anderson Directed It

The Episode VII trailer gets a very twee makeover

The trailer for the latest Star Wars installment has exploded in popularity and amassed more than 60 million views since it debuted last week, and also racked up tons of parodies.

Now, it has the quirkiest parody yet — a re-edit in the cutesy, iconic style of Wes Anderson. Yes, if Star Wars: The Force Awakens starred Bill Murray and had 1960s British invasion rock on the soundtrack its trailer might look something like this.

But if you’re digging the aesthetic, don’t get your hopes up. Anderson has already said that, although the Star Wars films have greatly influenced him, he doesn’t think he has what it takes to direct one. “I don’t know if I have all the right action chops,” he once told Deadline, “But at least I know the characters from the old films.”

Taylor Swift Would Be Absolutely Crazy Not to Record This Song Billy Eichner Wrote for Her

It's called "Glitter and Ribs" and it's pretty much perfect

Comedian Billy Eichner is a big Taylor Swift fan — so big, in fact, that he wrote a song in her style that he hopes she will one day record. It’s called “Glitter and Ribs” and he was kind enough to perform it on Conan Wednesday night. But first, he explained why he likes her so much.

“There are so many disturbing, upsetting things happening in our world right now, in our country, internationally, but Taylor Swift is writing about the most important topic, which is what happens when your boyfriend doesn’t text you back,” the Billy on the Street host explained. “And I think that’s so essential.”

You can watch his heartfelt performance above. Then you can watch the music video he recorded (dressed up as Tay-Tay) in 2013:

Watch Sofia Vergara Explain How She Became a U.S. Citizen

The Modern Family star tells Jimmy Kimmel she totally aced the citizenship test

In an interview on Jimmy Kimmel Live! Wednesday evening, Sofia Vergara — who, thanks to her role on Modern Family, is the highest-paid actress on television — talked about the long and “very emotional” process of becoming a United States citizen.

The most interesting part of the process, the Colombian-born actress said, was the 100-question test she had to take. But don’t worry — she aced it, getting all 100 questions right.

Other hoops she had to jump through, she explains, included swearing that she was going to fight for the United States and “swearing to the … thing.”

Vergara also took a moment to get a bit more serious about the process. “You know what? It’s a very emotional moment for me,” the Emmy-nominated actress said. “It took me a lot of time to get my residence even though I was working here for a long time.”

Watch Nick Offerman Sing a Beautiful Tribute to His One True Love, Whiskey

He strums a guitar, rides a horse, herds sheep and even does some woodworking

Sometimes it’s easy to forget that fictional Parks and Rec character Ron Swanson and the actor who plays him, Nick Offerman, are not, in fact, the same dude. Because really, the two mustachioed gentlemen seem to have quite a bit in common, such as the aforementioned mustaches and a shared love for masculinity, woodworking and, of course, whiskey.

To celebrate that last one, Offerman teamed with spirits company Diageo to sing a song detailing his deep love of the dark Scottish liquor.

The video has pretty much everything you’d hope for: Offerman walking stoically through the gorgeous Scottish isles, riding a horse, corralling sheep, practicing the fine art of woodworking, rocking some plaid, strumming a guitar while in a boat, and of course, sipping on his beloved beverage.

We recommend pouring yourself a glass of whiskey before viewing.

Did 30 Rock Call Out Bill Cosby for Sexual Assault Five Years Ago?

7th Annual "Stand Up For Heroes" Event - Arrivals

A subtle joke from a season 3 episode resonates much more clearly now

Back in 2009, a particularly memorable episode of 30 Rock called “The Bubble” featured guest star Jon Hamm as a really, really ridiculously good-looking doctor who, as a result of said good looks, never experienced the humiliations, inconveniences and general unpleasantness of everyday life. (As a result, he never really had to learn anything — so he was also tremendously dumb, which made for some fun jokes.)

But anyway, during that episode, the 30 Rock writers seemed to reference Bill Cosby’s alleged history of sexual assault, which only very recently became the subject of widespread national attention.

The folks over at Crushable noticed the reference, which most of us probably missed at the time. It comes up during contract negotations between Jack Donaghy (played by Alec Baldwin) and Tracy Jordan (played by Tracy Morgan.) Tracy has quit his job on TGS, so Jack hires a Bill Cosby impersonator named Rick to try to convince him to come back.

You can watch the full clip here, and read the exchange below:

Jack Donaghy: I’ve arranged for one of Tracy’s childhood idols to reach out to him.

Tracy Jordan: Hello?

Jack Donaghy: Tracy, this is Jack, I have someone here who wants to speak with you.

Rick: Tracy, this is Bill Cosby…

Liz Lemon: [whispering] Really? This is your strategy?

Jack Donaghy: [whispering and smiling] I heard him do this at a party!

Rick: …I want you to come back to the TGS for the people who like the jokes and the things.

Tracy Jordan: Bill Cosby, you got a lotta nerve gettin’ on the phone wit’ me after what you did to my Aunt Paulette!

Rick: I think you’re confusing me with someone else.

Tracy Jordan: 1971. Cincinnati. She was a cocktail waitress with the droopy eye!

Rick: I’m the guy… with the pudding…

Tracy Jordan: Don’t try to tell me what to do! Dr. Heathcliffe Huxtable, wit’ yo’ light-ass kids! Jack! Why would you make me talk to this man?

At the time, it was probably easy to overlook this exchange because Tracy was known for spewing total non-sequiturs, telling outlandish stories about his family history and generally being an unreliable narrator. But now that a number of women have publicly accused Cosby of sexual assault, this hardly feels like a throwaway one-off joke.

Also, keep in mind that in October, former 30 Rock writer Hannibal Buress publicly called Cosby out in a rant that helped ignite the ongoing national discussion. Granted, Buress began writing for the show after the episode in question aired, so he probably wasn’t responsible for this scene. But chances are he’s not the only member of the 30 Rock team — or the comedy community in general — who has been deeply frustrated for many years about the lack of attention given to the allegations against Cosby.

Of course, it’s possible that it’s all a weird coincidence and that this was just another example of Tracy being Tracy. But knowing what we know now, it’s hard to believe this was not an intentional (if subtle) jab.
