educating bristol bay
There are many organizations that are working to stop Pebble Mine from getting past the exploratory phase, but Nunamta is the organization closest to home. Prior to the Pebble controversy, the Bristol Bay region had very little experience with mining and focused primarily on the commercial fishing industry because of the large influx of capital that it has generated for the area. Because of the lack of exposure to mining, many people knew little to nothing about how mines of this scale operated and would impact everything from the land, water, air to people and animals that share these resources so Nunamta has made it a priority to educate people in the region.
Since incorporation in 2007, Nunamta has helped to organize several informational meetings and discussions about Pebble throughout Bristol Bay and the State. These meetings involved scientists, Pebble representatives, mining professionals and people who have lived in areas impacted by large scale mining development.
This tab provides some scientific information that we have been involved with gathering and insight on our local outreach with youth, elders and our communities.
