Newport Beach Police Scope Out Bicyclists, Motorcyclists and Pedestrians (Oh My!)
The Newport Beach Police Department is targeting bicyclists, motorcyclists and pedestrians Sunday--that is, BAD bicyclists, motorcyclists and pedestrians.

As part of grant-funded Special Traffic Enforcement and Crash Prevention (STEP) operations, extra officers will patrol the area of East Coast Highway, east of Macarthur Boulevard, which is known for recent collisions involving bicyclists, pedestrians and motorcyclists, according to the Newport Beach Police Department.
The goal is to reduce injuries through education and enforcement, say the coppers, who add there will be a special focus on those riding under the influence of alcohol or drugs, speeding, violating the new bicycle Three Feet for Safety Act, making illegal turns, jaywalking, red light violations "and any other dangerous activities."
Police also encourage those in four-wheeled (or more) vehicles to stay alert and watch for bicyclists, pedestrians, and motorcyclists, especially when turning or changing lanes.
Funding comes from a California Office of Traffic and Safety grant, through the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration. A similar safety operation is scheduled for Dec. 20, according to police.
