New York Giants History

The New York Giants are one of the oldest franchises in NFL History. Of the five teams that joined the NFL in 1925, the Giants are the only team still remaining. The Giants rank third all-time in NFL championships, with four before the Super Bowl era, and four during. With their long history, the Giants have been able to send 15 players to the Hall of Fame and have sold Giants tickets in six different home stadiums. The Giants won their first game in team history 26-0 vs. New Britain Connecticut in front of a crowd of 10,000 fans who purchased Giants tickets. The Giants were able to find success fast as they won the NFL title in only their third season and finished with a league best 11-1-1 record. The prime time for the Giants came in the years of 1933-1946 when they qualified to play in the title game eight times and won it twice during those years. The next 60 years for the Giants were marked with ups and downs, as other teams joined the NFL in the city of New York, cutting into the sales of Giants tickets slightly as fans had to choose which team to root for. Most recently, success has found the Giants by surprise as they were able to upset the undefeated New England Patriots in the 2007 Super Bowl, a year where the Giants were the wild card and did not sell any Giants tickets in the playoffs. The team was able to once again beat the Patriots in the Super Bowl as underdogs when they won 21-17 in a thrilling 2011 Super Bowl game.

MetLife Stadium and the fans

Meadowlands Stadium, also known as MetLife Stadium, is the home to not only the Giants, but also the New York Jets. MetLife Staidum is one of the newest stadiums in the NFL, constructed in 2010, and also is one of the largest, with a capacity to sell 82,566 Giants tickets. The first ever Giants tickets were sold at their original home at the historic Polo Grounds, which was also the former home of the New York Yankees for many years. After 30 seasons at the Polo Grounds, the team decided to move to the new Yankee Stadium and begin selling Giants tickets there. As the old Giants Stadium reached 30 years old, it was becoming one of the older stadiums in the NFL, and the Jets began looking for a new home. After failed attempts to get their own stadium, Jets ownership decided to enter into a partnership with the Giants in an effort to sell both Jets and Giants tickets at the same stadium. This vision came true in 2010 when the new Meadowlands Stadium opened for the first time. One of the notable events coming up at MetLife Stadium is the 2014 Super Bowl, an event that provides the opportunity to sell more than 80,000 Giants tickets at the biggest game of the season. The current rules for hosting a Super Bowl requires the city to have an average temperature of over 50 degrees in the month of February; something that the city of New York does not pass. However, commissioner Roger Goodell decided to waive this rule in favor of the Giants because of the great opportunity it presents by bringing the sport’s biggest event to the United States' biggest city.

    NY Giants News

12-3-14: The Giants scored the first 21 points of Sunday’s game in Jacksonville, but Eli Manning and company could not hold onto the lead as the team lost its seventh consecutive contest. New York’s defense allowed 22 straight points, but Josh Brown’s 33-yard field goal gave the Giants the 24-22 lead. However, Josh Scobee kicked the eventual game- winning field goal with 28 seconds remaining.

11-26-14: Odell Beckham Jr. shocked the world with his one-handed touchdown catch in Sunday night’s loss to the visiting Dallas Cowboys. The wide receiver finished with 10 receptions for 146 yards and two touchdowns, but Tony Romo and Dez Bryant were too much for the Giants as New York fell to 3-8 on the season.

11-19-14: Only one San Francisco 49er receiver caught five passes from Colin Kaepernick on Sunday in the 49ers’ 16-10 victory over the Giants at MetLife Stadium. Eli Manning, who completed just 22 of his 45 passing attempts, was intercepted five times by the San Francisco defense as the Giants fell to 3-7 on the season.

11-12-14: Rashad Jennings’ leg injury has continued to bother him, as he missed New York’s Week 10 loss to the Seattle Seahawks. The Giants’ offense scored 17 points in the first half, but was held scoreless in the final 30 minutes. Unfortunately, the Seahawks destroyed New York’s defense to the tune of 38 points.

11-5-14: Eli Manning and Andre Williams struggled early, as the Giants were down by multiple scores in the first half. Manning finished with 359 yards and two touchdowns, but completed just 27 of his 52 passing attempts in New York’s 40-24 loss. In addition, Tom Coughlin remained winless on Monday Night Football.

10-30-14: The Giants are hoping that their bye week will ready them for the rest of the season, but Rashad Jennings does not look ready for Week 9. He has yet to practice due to his knee injury, so it looks like Andre Williams will start against the Indianapolis Colts on Monday night. Unfortunately, the injury news continues as linebacker Jon Beason will undergo season-ending surgery to repair his injured right foot.

10-21-14: The Giants’ offense bounced back to score 21 points, but the Dallas Cowboys’ offense was firing on all cylinders, especially in the second half. New York allowed Dallas to score in all four quarters. While the starting quarterbacks each threw for three touchdowns, DeMarco Murray outrushed Andre Williams in this contest as the Giants fell to 3-4 on the season.

10-14-14: The Giants were not able to get much going on offense. It was such a frustrating night for Eli Manning that Ryan Nassib came in to attempt five passes. New York’s night got even worse when Victor Cruz was carted off field after suffering a torn patellar tendon; he is out for the season.

10-8-14: After losing the first two games of their season, the Giants have bounced back to win three straight contests. Even with Rashad Jennings leaving the game with a sprained knee, Andre Williams picked up where the starting running back left off and helped Eli Manning get the 30-20 victory against the visiting Atlanta Falcons.

10-1-14: Neither Eli Manning nor Larry Donnell could be stopped on Thursday in Washington. Eli Manning connected on 28 of his 39 pass attempts for 300 yards, and he scored five touchdowns. Manning targeted his tight end eight times in the 45-14 victory, and Donnell caught seven of Eli’s passes for 54 yards and three touchdowns.

9-25-14: The Giants got their first victory of the season on Sunday when they hosted the Arian Foster-less Houston Texans. New York dominated the game, and Rashad Jennings ran through the Houston defense. Jennings rushed for a career-high 176 yards and added a touchdown as well in the Giants’ 30-17 win.

9-17-14: Eli Manning looked strong early in Sunday’s game against the Arizona Cardinals, but the Giants mustered only 14 points as New York fell to 0-2 on the season. Even with the lack of scoring, tight end Larry Donnell played well once again, as he caught seven receptions for 81 yards.

9-10-14: Defensive end Jason Pierre-Paul had X-rays taken on his neck during Monday’s game, and they were negative, so he returned to play. Unfortunately, that was the extent of the Giants’ good news from Week 1. Eli Manning tossed a couple interceptions, and the Detroit Lions blew out the Giants.

9-4-14: A year after the divisional rival Washington Redskins went 4-0 in the preseason, the Giants topped them with a 5-0 preseason in 2014. Ryan Nassib was a big reason for their success, as he won the backup quarterback job. Therefore, the Giants waived Curtis Painter. The Giants also traded kicker Brandon McManus to the Denver Broncos for a conditional seventh-round draft pick.

8-26-14: With their 35-24 victory over the New York Jets on Friday, the Giants moved to an NFL-best 4-0 on the preseason. Eli Manning could have been more effective, but he did throw for a touchdown. Backup quarterback Ryan Nassib threw for three touchdowns on just eight completions. Unfortunately, rookie receiver Odell Beckham missed the game with a hamstring injury.

8-20-14: The Giants’ first unit did not look good on Saturday against the Indianapolis Colts, as New York was trailing, 26-0, heading into the fourth quarter. However, the backups finished the game by scoring 27 unanswered Giants points to help the team move to 3-0 this preseason. New York went ahead with a four-yard touchdown pass from Ryan Nassib to Corey Washington.

8-14-14: Rashad Jennings scored the first touchdown of the Giants’ preseason game against the Pittsburgh Steelers, and it was an exciting run. On the first play of the second New York drive, he ran for a 73-yard touchdown. The Giants won the game, 20-16, and Jason Pierre-Paul recorded a team-high four tackles. He says that he wants to have a Pro Bowl-caliber season this year.

8-5-14: After Michael Strahan was formally enshrined into the Pro Football Hall of Fame, the Giants began their preseason schedule with a victory in Sunday’s Hall of Fame Game in Canton, Ohio. They defeated the Buffalo Bills, 17-13, behind strong performances from third-string quarterback Ryan Nassib and backup running back Andre Williams. Unfortunately, David Wilson has been advised by doctors to permanently stop playing football after he was placed on injured reserve for the 2014 season.

7-30-14: New York Giants running back David Wilson can’t catch a break. Barely a week after finally being cleared to return to the practice field, Wilson is once again on the sidelines thanks to a new issue with his surgically repaired neck. Wilson sustained a “neck burner” in practice on Tuesday and will wait to be reevaluated on August 4th. He was pegged for a key role in New York’s offense and now could suddenly be looking at his career being in jeopardy. While Wilson could have to worry about possibly retiring, offensive guard Chris Snee already has. The G-Men lose a quality offensive lineman has opted to call it quits thanks to complications from hip and elbow surgeries. New York is also concerned about rookie wide receiver Odell Beckham, who has been missing time with a hamstring injury. Beckham is likely to sit out another week of practice and will miss the team’s first preseason game.

7-15-14: Rashad Jennings wasn’t just signed as an insurance policy for David Wilson. Per reports, the former Jaguar and Raider could be a full-fledged feature back for the G-Men. New York’s brass has referred to Jennings as a “bell cow” running back with the ability to carry an offense. New York still expects full clearance for Wilson (neck), however, and should find a role for the explosive third-year back if healthy. The Giants appear to be improved in just about every facet of the roster, but the jury is still out at the tight end spot. Big Blue failed to add a sure fire started in free agency or the draft and will field an open competition for the starting tight end gig during camp, which opens on July 21st.

6-5-14: The Giants cut ties with talented safety Will Hill recently due to a six-game suspension for substance abuse. Due to numerous league violations, the G-Men grew tired of their young safety’s antics and cut him loose. Safeties Stevie Brown and Antrel Rolle will start come week one. New York got more bad news after the release of Hill, as cornerback Jayron Hosley got a suspension of his own on June 4th. To top it off, versatile running back David Wilson still couldn’t be cleared (neck) in his most recent trip to gain medical clearance from doctors. Big Blue remains hopeful that Wilson can be cleared in time for camp.

5-19-14: The New York Giants had a horrendous 0-6 starts in 2013 thanks to horrible play across the board. They really took care of most of their defensive problems in free agency, but they still had major issues on both lines, while they also could have used help in the passing game as they entered the 2014 NFL Draft. Let’s see how well they addressed those areas of concern:

Round 1. Pick 12 Odell Beckham, WR, LSU
Round 2. Pick 11 Weston Richburg, C, Colorado St.
Round 3. Pick 10 Jay Bromley, DT, Syracuse
Round 4. Pick 13 Andre Williams, RB, Boston College
Round 5. Pick 12 Nat Berhe, DB, San Diego St.
Round 6. Pick 11 Bennett Jackson, CB, Notre Dame

Eli Manning was terrible a year ago, but a lot of it had to do with shaky pass protection and his receivers playing horribly, themselves. With that being a fact and Hakeem Nicks also gone, the G-Men were wise to bring in Odell Beckham. Beckham is a smooth route-runner who isn’t afraid to make plays on the ball or when it’s in his hands.

New York did a solid job on the remainder of the o-line in free agency, so their only glaring need there entering the draft was a long-term solution at center. Weston Richburg gives them that as this draft’s top-rated center.

The Giants went on to add some nice, young pieces for a revamped secondary, while Andre Williams might be their sleeper pick at running back. They were a mess in the backfield last season, so don’t be shocked if the productive Williams works his way into a big role.

5-9-14: The New York Giants had loads of problems that contributed to an 0-6 start and missing the playoffs in 2013. Naturally, they aimed to eradicate one of them to get the ball rolling in round one of the 2014 NFL Draft. LSU wide receiver Odell Beckham is a good step in the right direction, as the Giants desperately needed another talented receiver for Eli Manning to throw to. Hakeem Nicks left in free agency, Victor Cruz was banged up last year and there’s no guarantee that Reuben Randle is the answer at the number two spot. Landing a talented receiver like Beckham puts all of those worries to rest.

4-28-14: The New York Giants had a rough 2013 season for a litany of reasons, but two main ones were shaky offensive line play and inconsistency at the skill positions on offense. As early as round one, that could lead the G-Men to grab an offensive lineman, wide receiver or tight end, while running back is also a problem area of David Wilson (neck) can’t get back to top form. The Giants also could potentially have an issue on the inside of their defensive line with Linval Joseph jetting in free agency. That could make defensive tackle a major need and Pittsburgh’s Aaron Donald an elite solution. The Giants have enough holes that they won’t be honing in on just one position to get the 2014 NFL Draft started. Instead, they’ll likely just take the top player available on their board. Depending on who that ends up being, prospects like Eric Ebron, Taylor Lewan, Odell Beckham and the aforementioned Donald could all be in play in round one.

4-7-14: The New York Giants struggled mightily in the trenches on offense in 2013, so they got to work early in free agency to address one of their biggest needs by bringing in Geoff Schwartz and Charles Brown. With the offensive line looking a little better, they turned to running back and brought in Rashad Jennings, who should compete with David Wilson to start out of the backfield. New York even signed on former Giants receiver Mario Manningham to potentially help fill the hole left by the departed Hakeem Nicks. The G-Men were just as active on the defensive side of the ball, as they held onto linebacker Jon Beason and revamped their secondary in a big way with signings of Dominique Rodgers-Cromartie, Walter Thurmond III and Trumaine McBride.

3-21-14: The New York Giants started off 2013 in an 0-6 hole and were never able to recover. In an effort to plug the holes that aided that poor start, Big Blue went out and picked up the necessary pieces to get back to their winning ways. Running back Rashad Jennings was one of the early additions in free agency, as his presence makes Andre Brown expendable and also protects the Giants from relying on David Wilson too much, as well. New York’s major focus was actually on defense, however, where they patched up a shaky secondary with several key moves, including hanging onto safety Stevie Brown and bringing in underrated cornerback Walter Thurmond III, formerly of the Seahawks.

12-31-13: Eli Manning was knocked from the game with an ankle injury, but the Giants still got the job done at home, beating the Washington Redskins, 20-6. Jerrel Jernigan gave the G-Men the spark they needed to earn their seventh win of the year, as he put up 147 total yards and two touchdowns in the win.

12-24-13: Despite the Giants being out of the playoffs, they entered Detroit in week 16 with the hopes of playing spoiler. They did exactly that. The Giants hung close late and Will Hill returned an interception to force overtime. From there, New York’s Josh Brown nailed in a field goal to give the G-Men a 23-20 win and push the Lions out of the NFC playoff picture.

12-17-13: Eli Manning was abysmal in week 15, as he tossed five interceptions and couldn’t get anything on offense going in a crushing 23-0 shutout loss to the Seattle Seahawks at home. New York’s defense hung around as long as they could, but simply couldn’t overcome the offense’s complete lack of productivity.

12-10-13: Costly turnovers doomed New York, as they coughed up the ball three times and couldn’t muster enough offense in a rough 37-14 road loss to the San Diego Chargers. Eli Manning added to his league-leading interception total with two picks, while the G-Men simply couldn’t slow down Philip Rivers (three touchdowns) and the San Diego offense.

12-3-13: The Giants had every reason to fold up and mail it in, but they kept on fighting in week 13. Even with a shot at the playoffs likely over, Eli Manning and co. battled back and forth with the Washington Redskins until they finally claimed a 24-17 road win. Andre Brown was stuffed for most of the day, but his two rushing touchdowns played a huge role in getting New York it’s fifth win in it’s last six games.

11-26-13: Despite a horrible 0-6 start, the Giants entered week 12 with a serious chance at turning their season around if they could simply beat the Dallas Cowboys at home. And despite going down 21-6 in this one, they nearly made that happen. Eli Manning lead the 15-point comeback to tie it up at 21, all, but the G-Men couldn’t stop Tony Romo on the ‘Boys final drive and Dan Bailey ended it as the seconds ticked off in a 24-21 loss at home.

11-19-13: Eli Manning and the Giants offense did just enough to put points on the board, while it was the G-Men’s suddenly gritty defense that sealed the deal in a 27-13 home win over the Green Bay Packers in week 11. Jason Pierre-Paul put the finishing touches on a fairly dominant defensive performance, taking a Scott Tolzien interception to the house for the finishing margin.

11-12-13: Don’t look now, but the formerly 0-6 Giants are suddenly in the hunt for the NFC East. A third straight win has them within striking distance of first place in their division, thanks to putting the clamps on Terrelle Pryor and topping the Oakland Raiders at home, 24-20. Eli Manning continued to struggle and threw a pick-six in this one, but did enough overall to help get the G-Men to 3-6.

10-30-13: Eli Manning the the G-Men couldn’t score an offensive touchdown against the Philadelphia Eagles in week eight, but they didn’t have to. Josh Brown knocked in five field goals and Peyton Hillis helped control the clock as Big Blue worked their way to a second straight win. New York’s defense was impressive for the second week in a row, as they have no allowed zero offensive points in back to back weeks following a dreadful 0-6 start.

10-22-13: The New York Giants finally got off the schneid and earned their first win of 2013 by simply playing less ugly football than the Minnesota Vikings. Eli Manning survived numerous bad drops from his wide receivers to throw for 200 yards and a touchdown, while also managing to not throw an interception in a game for the first time all season. Newly signed running back Peyton Hillis was the arguable star of the day on offense, amassing 81 hard-earned yards and a touchdown in the 23-7 home victory.

10-15-13: The New York Giants appeared to finally be getting off the schneid in week six, as they chased their first win of 2013 in a tightly contested matchup on the road against the Chicago Bears. Unfortunately, despite actually establishing a surprisingly effective running game with unlikely hero Brandon Jacobs, Big Blue was done in the same way they have been all season - by turnovers. Eli Manning drove the G-Men down the field late, but a slightly overthrown pass intended for tight end Brandon Myers was tipped and intercepted, ending New York’s comeback bid in a 27-21 loss and sending them to a regrettable 0-6 hole to start the season.

10-8-13: The hits keep on coming for the New York Giants. Just when running back David Wilson seemed to be finding his place in the offense with a rushing score to give Big Blue a 7-0 lead, he exited New York’s week five NFC East battle with a neck injury. From that point on the Giants struggled on offense, as backup running back Brandon Jacobs managed just 37 yards on 11 carries and coughed up a fumble, while quarterback Eli Manning tossed three interceptions. New York managed just two touchdowns the rest of the way and could not stop Nick Foles (who entered for an injured Michael Vick) in the disappointing 36-21 home loss, sending the Giants to a horrendous 0-5 start.

10-1-13: The slide of the once mighty New York Giants continued on in week four, as a close 10-7 game against the undefeated Kansas City Chiefs got broken open by a punt return for a score by KC. The Giants never recovered from that momentum-changing play, as Eli Manning took three sacks and turned the ball over three times in a 31-7 road loss to send the G-Men to an 0-4 hole. The lone bright spot in the blowout loss was star wide receiver Victor Cruz, who reeled in 10 catches for 164 receiving yards and had New York’s only touchdown in it’s last eight quarters of football - a 69-yard bomb from Manning. The Giants look to get off the schneid in week five against the 1-3 Philadelphia Eagles.

9-19-13: Eli Manning and elder brother Peyton Manning waged war in the third ever “Manning Bowl” in week two. Older brother Peyton owned a commanding 2-0 lead over Eli, and many felt the younger Manning brother would finally get a win and keep his Giants from sliding into an early 0-2 hole. That wouldn’t be the case, as the Broncos destroyed the Giants 41-23 at MetLife Stadium. The Broncos spent most of the game rattling Eli Manning and forced the younger Manning into misguided throws that resulted in four interceptions. Eli still ended up passing for over 360 yards for the second week in a row, but a lack of a running game made New York’s offense one-dimensional. The Giants look to avoid a 0-3 start when they take on the Panthers next weekend in Charlotte.

9-10-13: Eli Manning entered this matchup with a 4-0 record in AT&T stadium, but a new 4-3 Dallas defensive scheme threw a wrench in Peyton Manning’s little brother’s plans to extend that streak. Manning did end up tossing fro 450+ yards and four touchdowns, but three picks and three more turnovers from the rest of Big Blue ended up leading to New York’s demise. The final was 36-31 as the Giants fell to 0-1 on the year. Next week, Eli and co. will host Peyton Manning and the Broncos at MetLife Stadium.

9-4-13: Here are the New York Football Giants' final cuts as they prepare for the 2013 regular season: QB David Carr, OT Matt McCants, S Tyler Sash, DE Matt Broha, S David Caldwell, G Stephen Goodin, CB Charles James, T Matt McCants, CB Terrence Frederick, DT Marvin Austin, DE Adrian Tracy, DE Adewale Ojomo, LB Kyle Bosworth, OL Eric Herman, OL Bryant Browning, WR Kevin Hardy, Marcus Harris, WR Julian Talley.

8-21-13: It was a disappointing and somewhat unsettling week 2 of the preseason for Big Blue. The disappointing part was the game itself, a 20-12 loss to the Colts. The unsettling part was the injuries. Wide receiver Victor Cruz came up hobbling and had to leave the game with a bruised heel. Starting center David Baas also had to leave the game with a sprained knee.

Eli Manning wasn't very good, completing just 8 of 17 passes for 91 yards and an interception. Andre Brown ran the ball 8 times for 36 yards, while David Wilson also ran it 8 times for 34 yards. On the positive side, kicker Josh Brown was 4 of 4 on field goals including a long of 47 yards.

This week, the Giants take on the Jets for their annual preseason grudge match.

8-11-13: The NY Giants defeated the Pittsburgh Steelers 18-13 in their first preseason game of 2013. Eli Manning and Victor Cruz connected for a 57-yard touch down in the 1st quarter, which was the only offensive TD of the game.

Manning was just 2-for-5 for 73 yards and that Cruz TD in his only series of the game. Running back David Wilson carried the ball 5 times for 16 yards, while Andre Brown pitched in with 23 yards on 4 carries

7-10-13: The Giants missed the playoffs in 2012 after another one of their classic late season swan dives, but will enter 2013 with the majority of their lineup intact. They did lose defensive end Osi Umenyiora and running back Ahmad Bradshaw, but also drafted defensive end Damontre Moore and are expecting a big role out of second-year running back David Wilson. With Eli Manning still at the top of his game and one of the deepest defensive lines in football, the Giants stand a good chance at returning to the playoffs in 2013.

7-7-13: Victor Cruz has agreed to sign a 5-year extension with the Giants worth $43 million. $15.6 is guaranteed money.

6-12-13: The Giants usually don’t have much trouble getting fans in the seats, and that has everything to do with being one of the league’s more traditional teams in a highly populated area. Oh, and the fact that they’ve won two Super Bowls in the past six years. Eli Manning and Big Blue sat out of post-season play in 2012 and didn’t love the feeling, so Giants fans can likely expect New York to turn right around and play 2013 with a giant (no pun intended) chip on their shoulder. New York needs to reel in restricted free agent wide receiver Victor Cruz, but otherwise there is little reason to expect the Giants to sit at home during the playoffs for two straight seasons.

    2013 Giants Draft Overview:

  • Round 1, Pick 19: Justin Pugh, OT, Syracuse
  • Round 2, Pick 17: Johnathan Hankins, DT, Ohio State
  • Round 3, Pick 19: Damontre Moore, DE, Texas A&M
  • Round 4, Pick 19 (from San Diego through Arizona): Ryan Nassib, QB, Syracuse
  • Round 5, Pick 19: Cooper Taylor, S, Richmond
  • Round 7, Pick 19: Eric Herman, OG, Ohio
  • Round 7, Pick 47 (Compensatory Selection): Michael Cox, RB, Massachusetts

1/3/13: After a solid start to the season, the Giants stumbled in the 2nd half of the season. Huge losses to the Redskins, Ravens and Falcons were too much to overcome and the defending Super Bowl champions fell short of the playoffs and finished with a 9-7 record.

12/4/12: Sitting at 7-4 the defending champion New York Giants seem to be gearing up for the playoffs once again. But first they will have their work cut out for them as they try and claim the division. With the Cowboys and Redskins just a game behind at 6-6 apiece, the difficult remaining schedule for the Giants could easily drop them to second or even third place. Up next for them is the struggling Saints who are 5-7 but have a high powered offense. The Giants are only 1-1 since their unusually late bye week and need to clamp down for the reminder of the season.
